Chaldean and Pythagorean Numerology Compared
Two charts, one alphabet. The Pythagorean runs 1 to 9 straight down the letters; the Chaldean runs 1 to 8, assigns values by sound, and gives no letter a 9. Both borrow an ancient name for an arrangement written up much more recently, and each hands the same name a different figure — which is the plainest sign these are readings to try on rather than measurements of anybody.
Two charts over the same alphabet
A name is letters, and arithmetic needs figures, so any numerology that starts from a name has to pass through a lookup table: a list that says what each letter is worth. Two such tables are in general circulation, usually called the Pythagorean chart and the Chaldean chart.
Both cover the same twenty-six letters. Both stop at a small number — the Pythagorean runs 1 through 9, the Chaldean 1 through 8, with no letter given a 9. Both feed the same procedure afterwards: add up the letters of a name, add the digits of that total, and keep going until one figure is left.
What the two do not share is the values themselves. Enter the letter S into one chart and it is worth 1; enter it into the other and it is worth 3. Same alphabet, same arithmetic, different answer at the end.
The Pythagorean chart
The Pythagorean chart has one organising idea, and it is the alphabet itself. A is 1, B is 2, and the count goes on to I at 9; then J starts over at 1 and the cycle repeats to the end of Z. Nothing about a letter's sound comes into it — only its position.
Where the chart comes from is more recent than the name suggests. The version used today was written up by American authors in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, L. Dow Balliett and later Juno Jordan among them, and the attribution to Pythagoras is asserted within that literature rather than traced through it. Whether the older line exists is not something this page can settle either way.

The Chaldean chart
The Chaldean chart is arranged on a different principle. A letter's value is said to follow how it sounds rather than where it sits in the alphabet, so letters nowhere near each other in sequence can share a figure and neighbours can be far apart. The values run 1 through 8, and no letter is assigned a 9 at all.
The tradition attributes the arrangement to Babylonian practice — Chaldea being an old name for southern Mesopotamia — and it reached modern English readers largely through late-Victorian popularisers, the palmist and numerologist who published as Cheiro chief among them. That ancient descent is a claim made inside the tradition and repeated in its own books, rather than a documented line running from tablet to table.
As for the missing 9, the tradition's own reason is that the figure was held apart, too consequential to hand out to a letter. That is how the practice accounts for its chart, and it is worth reporting rather than adopting. Nothing in what follows rests on it, and a total can still come down to 9 regardless.
The same name through both charts
Take an invented name: SUSANNE BADEN.
In the Pythagorean chart, SUSANNE gives S 1, U 3, S 1, A 1, N 5, N 5, E 5 — that is 1 plus 3 plus 1 plus 1 plus 5 plus 5 plus 5, which is 21. BADEN gives B 2, A 1, D 4, E 5, N 5: 2 plus 1 plus 4 plus 5 plus 5 is 17. And 21 plus 17 is 38. Then 3 plus 8 is 11, and 1 plus 1 is 2, so a practitioner who reduces everything finishes on the single digit 2. One who keeps master numbers stops at 11 and never takes that last step.
The Chaldean chart gives the same letters other values: S is 3, U is 6, A is 1, N is 5, E is 5. SUSANNE adds as 3 plus 6 plus 3 plus 1 plus 5 plus 5 plus 5, which is 28. BADEN scores the same in both charts: 2 plus 1 plus 4 plus 5 plus 5 is 17 again. So 28 plus 17 is 45. Chaldean practice usually pauses to read the two-digit compound, 45, before reducing; then 4 plus 5 is 9. No Chaldean letter carries a 9, and the total landed there anyway.

The digits, and where the two readings part
1 leans toward being the one who begins, which is a tilt of attention rather than an edge over anybody. 2 keeps the other person in view, and asks about timing before it asks about effort. 3 wants the thing said and the thing made; whether anyone listens is no part of the figure. 4 prefers work that holds weight and draws no applause — an emphasis, not a fence around a life. 5 arrives as appetite and the urge to be elsewhere, worth questioning rather than simply obeyed. 6 is looking after somebody, chosen rather than assigned, with the duties that come attached. 7 wants quiet and owes nobody a reason for it; distance, not chill. 8 keeps a running account of what things cost and how much can be shouldered, and Chaldean readers call it heavy, which is their reading and not a caution. 9 is width, and loosening a grip — the one figure absent from the Chaldean letters.
11 stays 11 among practitioners who keep master numbers, rather than collapsing through 1 plus 1 to 2; they read it as perception turned up high, never as rank. 22 likewise stays whole instead of becoming 2 plus 2, which is 4, and is read as an appetite for building something that lasts — not a finer place to have landed.
Worth saying once and plainly: this vocabulary is largely shared across the two systems. The difference lies in the path a name walks to reach its digit, not in a separate set of meanings waiting at the far end. Not one of these entries announces an event, a date or a reversal of fortune.
Which name each system asks for
There is a second disagreement, and it is practical rather than arithmetical. Pythagorean practice commonly asks for the full name as it appears on a birth certificate, middle names included. Chaldean practice commonly asks for the name a person actually goes by — the one people say out loud, which is consistent enough with a chart built on sound. Plenty of practitioners do both, or run a maiden name, a married name and a nickname side by side to see what each returns.
No procedure inside either tradition settles which name is the right one to enter. So the same person can walk away with three or four figures depending on who is asking and which chart they hold. That is not a scandal; it is what happens when two lookup tables and several naming conventions are all in use at once.
What to do when the two answers differ
The useful move is to treat two answers as two descriptions to try against the same name, and then notice which one you argue with. Resistance is often more informative than agreement — a description you want to push away has told you something about your own reading of yourself, whatever the chart was doing.
The misuses are easy to name. Chart-shopping until a flattering digit appears settles nothing except which chart you preferred. Paying someone to correct a spelling, or to rename a business, buys a different total and nothing else. Reading the mismatch as proof that one system is fake and the other real asks the arithmetic to do work it cannot do. Neither chart licenses a decision. A disagreement between two lookup tables diagnoses nobody.
When it is just a lookup table
Both charts are assignments that people made and wrote down, and any table of that kind will return a small digit from any string of letters — a name, a street, a made-up word. The arithmetic never fails to produce something.
There is also a plain observation worth sitting beside the symbolic one. Researchers describe what is called the Barnum effect, after the showman: broadly-worded descriptions are widely accepted as personally apt, including by people handed a description meant for someone else. That is one account of why both readings can seem to fit the same name, offered without claiming it covers every case. Naming it does not cancel the practice or take it away from anyone who uses it.
Holding both charts honestly
So: two traditions worth knowing the shape of, each with its own logic — one counting position, one listening to sound — and each with an old name attached by assertion. And, underneath both, arithmetic performed over a spelling somebody chose or was given.
You can read your name through either chart, or through both and let them disagree, or through neither. Nothing here ranks the figures or crowns a system. Whichever table you pick up, the digit at the end is a reading laid over letters, and what you do with it stays yours.

Which is more accurate, Chaldean or Pythagorean numerology?
Neither has been shown to be accurate about a person, so there is no ranking to give. They are two different assignments of digits to letters, each with its own logic — position in the alphabet in one case, sound in the other. Practitioners have preferences, and those preferences are worth hearing as preferences rather than findings. If the two charts hand your name different figures, that difference tells you about the tables, not about you.
Why does the Chaldean chart have no 9 in it?
The tradition's own explanation is that 9 was held apart from the letters, treated as too consequential to be assigned to one. That is the account the practice gives of its own chart; this page reports it rather than endorsing it, and nothing about the number's supposed power follows from its absence. Note also that a total can still land there: the compound 45 is 4 plus 5, which is 9, even though no Chaldean letter carries one.
Does either system actually say anything true about a person?
The arithmetic is true about the spelling — add the letters and the total is the total. What neither chart offers is a tested claim about the person behind the name, and neither predicts anything about what is coming. Broad descriptions tend to find purchase either way, which is one reason both charts can feel apt. What they can honestly be used for is reflection: a description to try on, agree with, or push back against.
